Italy isn’t really known for its electronic music festivals, as far as I am aware. Sure, I have heard of the Kappa FuturFestival, maybe some action in Venice around Carnaval time, but apart from that, diddly squat. However, it seems something special has been cooking up in Sicily for the past few years all this time. And what’s more, it smacks of a true, underground vibe!
Now celebrating its sixth edition, Ortigia Sound System (OSS) is an electronic boutique festival on the tiny, stunning Sicilian island of Ortygia, nestled offshore from Syracuse running through 24-28 of July. The island provides a truly historic backdrop with the 2018 edition seeing an attendance of more than 13,000 revellers dancing to 50 international artists performing across 7 locations across the island – including the festival’s infamous boat parties. Pretty much why OSS is the most sought after boutique festival in Italy right now.
The 2019 version seeks to carry on these fine traditions, combining classic and cutting-edge electronic music blasted out by live acts and DJs performing all around the island from 1 pm to 6 am, with after parties running until 11 am. This year’s special guest is non other than disco creator and electronic music producer Giorgio Moroder with his only performance in Italy for his 2019 world tour. At nearly 80 years of age, this sounds like a Moroder performance not to be missed, especially as he will playing all his finest hits, such as Blondie’s Call Me and the like!
Some key points of OSS 2019 edition:
London-based label Hessle Audio is showcasing a 7-hour set by the founders Ben UFO, Pearson Sound and Pangaea. A special focus on the UK underground scene with the talented DJ and radio host Sherelle, while the young Berlin booking agency Odd Fantastic will present an all-female lineup with one of the voices of NTS Radio, Danielle, and the cosmic techno of Beta Librae.
Not to be outdone, the Italians will also feature strongly with a special showcase celebrating the 10 years’ anniversary of Italian-Berlin label Slow Motion as well as other national talent performing at the event.
OSS is also hosting Boiler Room for the first time in Sicily with Call Super, Jerusalem in my Heart, Lino Capra Vaccina, Lamusa II and Danielle and also featues an exclusive DJ set by Virgil Abloh, the founder of trendy street wear brand Off-White.
In between the venue-billed events there will be 8 boat parties with top artists such as Leon Vynehall (Ninja Tune), founder of Music From Memory Jamie Tiller, Italian independent label Hell Yeah Recordings, the Balearic Gabba Sound System and the Norwegian house music veteran Bjørn Torske.
